Which Jobs Qualify for a
UK Skilled Worker Visa?

🗓 March 2026⏱ 7 min read📋 SOC codes explained

One of the first questions anyone applying for a UK Skilled Worker visa asks is: does my job even qualify? The answer depends entirely on something called a SOC code — and understanding it could be the difference between getting sponsored and getting rejected before you even apply.

This guide explains exactly what SOC codes are, which jobs are eligible in 2026, what salary you need to earn, and how to check whether your specific role qualifies — in plain English, no jargon.

What is a SOC code?

SOC stands for Standard Occupational Classification. It's a 4-digit number the UK government uses to classify every type of job. The current system is called SOC 2020 (updated from the older SOC 2010 system).

Every job in the UK has a SOC code. For example, "Software Developer" is SOC 2136, "Registered Nurse" is SOC 2231, and "Civil Engineer" is SOC 2121. When your employer sponsors you for a Skilled Worker visa, they have to specify which SOC code your role falls under. The Home Office then checks whether that code is on the eligible list — and whether your salary meets the threshold for it.

💡 SOC 2020 vs SOC 2010

The UK moved from SOC 2010 to SOC 2020 codes for Skilled Worker visa applications. If you're reading older guides, some code numbers will be different. Always use the SOC 2020 codes — the official GOV.UK list uses these.

How many jobs qualify?

Over 250 occupation groups are eligible for the Skilled Worker visa — a wide range covering professional, technical, trades, creative, healthcare, care, and hospitality roles. However, not every job within an eligible group automatically qualifies — your specific duties and salary must also match.

The list is updated periodically by the Home Office. The most recent update on 22 July 2025significantly expanded the eligible occupations, adding roles across trades (electricians, plumbers, bricklayers), creative industries (artists, musicians, dancers), hospitality (chefs, catering managers), and care. Always check the official GOV.UK list before assuming your role qualifies or doesn't.

💡 July 2025 update expanded the list

The 22 July 2025 immigration rules update added over 150 new eligible SOC codes — trades, arts, finance associates, admin roles, care workers, chefs, and more. If your role was previously ineligible, it may now qualify. Check the latest GOV.UK going rates page to confirm.

Salary thresholds by code

Each SOC code has a minimum salary requirement. If you're paid below this "going rate", your employer cannot sponsor you — even if you're doing the exact same work.

Standard minimum

£41,700

General floor — or going rate if higher

Lower going rate

£33,400

New entrants & shortage occupations

NHS / DfE roles

Pay scale

Doctors, nurses, teachers — use sector rates

Note: Your employer must prove your role genuinely requires the skill level of your SOC code. Simply being eligible doesn't mean every employer can sponsor you in that role — they need to show the position requires that level of expertise, and that they couldn't fill it with a UK worker.

How to check if your job qualifies

  1. 1

    Identify your SOC code

Visit the official SOC 2020 online search tool and type your job title. You'll get a 4-digit code.

  2. 2

    Check the eligible occupations list

Go to GOV.UK and download the current Skilled Worker visa eligible occupations list. Search for your code.

  3. 3

    Check the salary threshold

Next to each eligible code is a minimum salary. Make sure your job offer meets or exceeds this.

  4. 4

    Verify the employer is licensed

Even if your code qualifies, the employer must hold a Skilled Worker sponsor licence. Check on the GOV.UK register.
